The 5th International annual conference “Actual Problems of Art Theory and History

The conference is to be held on October 28 – November 1, 2014 at the Faculty of History of St. Petersburg State University and The State Hermitage Museum.

Theme: “Antiquity through Centuries. The Age of Topicality”

29.10.14 (Wednesday)

  • Session “Classical Antiquity and the World around Hellas” (10:00–16:30. The State Hermitage Museum, Council Hall). Upon completion, the tour to the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Centre of The State Hermitage Museum is planned.
  • Session “Oriental Echo of Classical Antiquity” (10:00–18:00. St. Petersburg State University, Petrovsky Hall)

30.10.14 (Thursday)

  • Session “Legacy of Classical Antiquity in the Byzantine World, European Middle Ages and Old Russia” (10:00–19:00. St. Petersburg State University, Petrovsky Hall)
  • Session “Art of Classical Antiquity in the Mirror of the Renaissance” (10:00–14:00. St. Petersburg State University, Faculty of History, auditorium 70)
  • Session “Western European Art of the XVII–XIX Centuries. Classical Tradition’s Destiny: from Model to Interpretation” (15:00–19:00. St. Petersburg State University, Faculty of History, auditorium 70)
  • Session “Art of the XX–XXI Centuries. Faces of Classical Antiquity in the Labyrinth of Modernity” (15:00–19:00. St. Petersburg State University, Faculty of History, auditorium 66).

Upon completion of the sessions, art or photo exhibition, which is traditionally associated with the conference, is to be opened in the foyer of the  Lectorium at the Faculty of History.

31.10.14 (Friday)

  •  Session “Russian Art of the XVIII–XIX Centuries. Art of Classical Antiquity: the Russian View” (10:30–14:30. St. Petersburg State University, Petrovsky Hall)

Panel discussion (The State Hermitage Museum, the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities)

  • Fine arts and architecture within and outside the heritage of Classical antiquity.

 

  • Modern art in the old museum. Discussion on the conceptual expositional projects: Louise Bourgeois and Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and Art-objects within the programme of Manifesta-2014.

Time limit for speeches – 20 minutes.

Lectures and tours over the galleries of the Hermitage.

  • Galleries of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities.
  • The Hermitage Treasury. The world of the Hellenes and barbarians.
  • The general tour. Antique world in the Western European art.
  • Modern art in the old museum: Louise Bourgeois and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (room 131), and Art-objects within the programme of Manifesta-2014.

01.11.2014 (Saturday)

The sightseeing tours to Pavlovsk and Tsarskoye Selo.

It is possible to arrange seminars in Novgorod and Pskov (1–2 days, at the wish of the participants of the conference).

 The conference will bring together the leading experts in the field of art history, the scholars and professors of the Russian universities (St. Petersburg State University, Lomonosov Moscow State University etc.) and the foreign universities (University of Berkeley, College of Dortmund (USA), Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, Italian universities La Sapienza and the Tor Vergata, Athens Aristotle University, the Athens Academy of Sciences, Thessaloniki University, Koç University (Turkey), Yerevan State University, Berlin Humboldt University, the Free University of Berlin, Westphalia Wilhelm University (Münster), the University of Vienna etc.), including the art historians of the State Hermitage Museum. Also the work of the thematic sessions provides for active participation of the young scholars up to 35 years and postgraduates of the specialized universities.
