Physics Colloquium: What is happening inside the synchrotron?

Hovedinnhold

During the last couple of decades the development of large scale facilities for the generation of X-rays (so-called synchrotron radiation) has almost revolutionized research areas where structural studies of condensed matter (primarily solid states, but also fluids and solutions) are important.  In the talk we will first have a look at what synchrotron radiation is and how it is generated. In particular, we will review some recent developments concerning focusing of X-rays - with the aim of developing an X-ray transmission microscope. Finally, some recent diffraction experiments, yielding interesting new information about a seemingly well-known compound, will be presented.
