PhD student Chandini Murarilal Ratnadevi was awarded the First Prize for her poster presentation at the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) course in Molecular Geobiology held at European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Heidelberg,Germany, August 2018.

The course led by internationally renowned experts in impact cratering brought together early career researchers in the fields of geology, planetary science, micro - and molecular biology for an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Geobiology. The course included a field excursion to the Ries impact structure for sample collection that subsequently were used to study Rock associated microbial communities. Another focus point was gaining an understanding of the role of geobiology in the origin and evolution of life, geobiological biosignatures and the interplay between geochemistry and microbial metabolism. For this a host of state of the art molecular techniques were used, including, various in situ sequencing methods, comparison of data sets based on 16S amplicon sequencing and complete 16S field - based sequencing techniques.
