Happy 40th to black smoker vents
Happy 40th anniversary to black smoker vents! On April 21st,1979, deep sea explorers in the submersible HOV Alvin took the first ever photo of a "black smoker" hydrothermal vent.

Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research has been taking part in an NSF-funded international expedition "Hot2Cold" as it revisits microbial life and death on black smokers at the East Pacific Rise, 9°N.
