Happy 40th to black smoker vents

Happy 40th anniversary to black smoker vents! On April 21st,1979, deep sea explorers in the submersible HOV Alvin took the first ever photo of a "black smoker" hydrothermal vent.

With support from the Meltzer Research Fund, Associate Professor Eoghan Reeves from the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research has been taking part in an NSF-funded international expedition "Hot2Cold" as it revisits microbial life and death on black smokers at the East Pacific Rise, 9°N.
