Practicalities

The Makerere-Bergen Research School takes place at Makerere University in Uganda and at a hub at the University of Bergen.

Before you start your application, please carefully check whether you meet the academic requirements. This research school is only for PhD candidates currently enrolled in an academic programme.

Application deadline: 30 September 2022.

Travel and accommodation

All participants will organise their own travel and accommodation. For participants attending at Makerere University, campus accommodation will be available for a fee.

All applicants are responsible for obtaining obligatory travel insurance. Visa, travel insurance, and airport tax must be paid for by the participants.

Stipends

We offer a limited number of travel stipends. These are awarded based on academic merit as it appears in your application and the relevance of your research to the course objectives. You must be registered PhD candidate at an academic institution to be eligible for a stipend.  

Please note that stipends are not available for students attending at the Bergen hub, nor for students enrolled in their PhD programme at Makerere University.

The stipend will cover the cost of air ticket, visa, and fees for obligatory travel insurance. There is a predefined cost for tickets for all countries. The predefined cost of the air ticket will be indicated in the letter of acceptance. Recipients will book and pay for the air tickets, insurance and visa themselves.

Organisation

Most of the lectures will be held at Makerere University and streamed live to Bergen Global, where the Bergen hub will be located. Some lectures will be held at Bergen Global and streamed to Makerere University. All participants are given equal opportunity for questions and comments via microphones and speakers at both locations.

During seminars, both locations will be able to communicate with each other through conference equipment, which will be used for group discussions and presentations. Please note that all participants must bring their own laptop or tablet as this will facilitate your group work and assignments. Participants will be divided into groups based on their geographical location.

Acceptance to the course includes coverage of course materials, social events, lunch during working days, and an excursion. You will also have full access to the University of Bergen Library and its online resources for at least 6 months.

Meals

Lunch and coffee/tea will be served every working day. Also, some social events include a light meal. Participants are themselves responsible for all other meals.
