Sociology of education – Older and recent studies and theories

Course Description

The starting point of this course is the roots of the sociology of education. We follow some of the most important studies and theories developed within the field and discuss their contemporary relevance.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • The candidate is at the forefront of knowledge regarding the history, traditions, distinct features, and current position of key theoretical currents in the sociology of education.

Skills

  • The candidate can handle complex questions within sociological theory of education and challenge/discuss established practices in the field.
  • The candidate can construct a historical argument related to the development of theories in the sociology of education.
  • The candidate can develop and provide a well-founded rationale for their own theoretical position.

Competence

  • The candidate can assess the need for, initiate, and engage in theoretical innovation.
  • The candidate can apply previous social science research and theories within the field.
  • The candidate is familiar with the academic discourse in the field.
  • The candidate can critically engage with and discuss scholarly literature.

 

ECTS requirements (5 ECTS)

Participation: 80%

Home assignment of 10 pages (8,000 words)

Seminar with feedback (1.5 hours)

Duration: 4 weeks
