Teach the teacher workshop: Building Competency-Based Assessment
The Department of Family Medicine, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences recently participated in a two-day Teaching of Teachers workshop on assessment, learning, and teaching, organized by NORHED PRICE and facilitated by faculty from the Teaching and Learning Development Centre from Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

The workshop brought together Family Medicine and Palliative Care registrars, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening teaching and assessment across disciplines. The sessions highlighted the importance of aligning learning outcomes, teaching methods, and assessment tools to ensure meaningful evaluation of competence. Registrars were encouraged to use assessment to support learning, guide feedback, and identify areas for improvement early.
In her opening remarks, Dr Makwero, representing the Head of the Department of Family Medicine, expressed appreciation to NORHED PRICE for organizing and supporting the workshop, highlighting its importance in strengthening competency-based teaching and assessment. A central message of the training was clear and consistent: the primary purpose of assessment is to determine competency. Assessment was emphasized not as an administrative requirement, but as a deliberate process to establish whether a learner can safely and effectively apply knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes in real clinical settings.
