Why the Gulf Stream never stops

A collapse of the Gulf Stream could have major consequences. Fortunately, there is no reason to believe that this is going to happen. In this event, two researchers explore what Gulf Stream observations reveal today and what models indicate about its future.

Hovedinnhold

About the event (held in English)

The Gulf Stream holds an almost mythical status in Norway. It explains why we have milder winters than other places at the same latitude, and why our marine areas are among the most productive in the world. The media regularly report on an apparently imminent collapse of the Gulf Stream. This fear has received considerable attention in the media over the past few decades, especially after the 2004 disaster film The Day After Tomorrow portrayed a United States freezing over as a result of a collapse of the Gulf Stream. Like most disaster films, it is highly exaggerated, but it is nevertheless rooted in genuine concerns about how ocean circulation will be affected by global warming.

In this event, two researchers explore what Gulf Stream observations reveal today and what models indicate about its future.
