Academic Tribes and their Territories in Teacher Education

TPE-members connected to the project: Associate Professor Marit Ulvik & Professor Kari Smith, University of Bergen. International Partner: Professor Jean Murray, University of East London, UK

Hovedinnhold

This comparative study between teacher education in England and Norway focuses on
student teachers’ views of their teacher educators (school-based as well as institutional
based) and the institutional contexts in which they study. The research project was first
initiated by a research team at the University of East London which also developed the
research design.

The comparative study examines the extent to which students in the two
different contexts (different teacher education programmes and cultures) perceive the teacher educators’ identities and knowledge. The participating student teachers are asked to complete questionnaires, consisting of a series of closed questions, using Likert scales and space for free text responses to each question.

To explore the resulting issues in-depth, a small sample of the students are interviewed. A comparison between various educational contexts across national borders yields important information and can shed new light on the specific system and on teacher education internationally.
