Investigate if low oxygen in the environment influence growth in gobies on the Namibian coast

An open master project in the Evolutionary ecology & ecosystems group of EvoFish.

Hovedinnhold

Supervisors: Anne Gro Vea Salvanes and Arild Folkvord (Fisheries Ecology & Aquaculture)

Population genetic studies indicate that there are sub-populations of gobies in the Benguela, but it is not known whether this is linked to differences in growth and whether males and female gobies respond differently to low oxygen.

This project will investigate the distribution of size and growth across the shelf area and test for sex differences; does low oxygen limit growth? Does limit of oxygen affect males different from females?

The Project will involve reading and review literature on functioning of upwelling ecosystems and naturally eutrophic ecosystems, lab work using modern ageing techniques, and perhaps some field work in Africa to supplement materials if necessary.
