The sundial in Bergen

Supervisor: Runar Ile, email: runar.ile math.uib.no

Hovedinnhold

Prerequisites: None beyond courses that are common requirements for MAT292. For the physics involved, see Kepler's laws as described in R. A. Adam's book "Calculus - A complete course".

Description: The project is to give a mathematical description of a horizontal sundial with a date display for Bergen, starting from Kepler's laws. What must be changed if the sundial is to be somewhere else? One should draw up sketches that can be used as working drawings for craftsmen who will set up the sundial in Festplassen. A question one can also investigate mathematically is "how accurate can the sundial be?"

In the project one will also investigate and describe alternative designs of the sundial with a date display.
