Progress in diarrheal disease research in Bangladesh

Diarrheal diseases cause about 100 000 deaths annually in Bangladesh, mostly amoung children. Shigella bacteria are the most deadly diarrhea-causing agents (shigellosis), and no efficient vaccines are available. Through a NUFU-funded project at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, the environmental biology of Shigella and related bacteria and gene transfer between these microorganisms is being investigated, a work that opens up for new vaccine development strategies.
