Project Extreme Prematurity

Advances in neonatal medicine have improved the survival of infants with low birth weight. Repeatedly an increased prevalence of psychological and medical problems has been documented in this group of children such as intellectual disturbances, language delays and behaviour problems like ADHD and learning difficulties. Medical problems comprise subnormal growth, various illnesses and neurodevelopmental problems. This excess morbidity makes this group of children target for follow‑up assessments and early intervention.

Hovedinnhold

The purpose of the project is to get a better understanding of what determines the viability and functional levels later in life in children born extremely preterm and how children and families can best be helped. Another aim is to determine the effect of early intervention given to children born extremely preterm. Preterm children are characterized by immaturity in all vital systems at birth, and early intervention must be monitored so the baby is not inflicted any harm in both a short and long term perspective.

Project Extreme Prematurity is a Norwegian research project with cooperation between all neonatal intensive care units, most of the maternity wards in Norway, and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway.
