Could the ocean be the key to pandemic preparedness?

As humanity learns from the challenges posed in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, new possibilities to be prepared emerge: Could the ocean hold the key to pandemic preparedness? Join us for this event where we delve into this question and explore the multifaceted relationship between the ocean, pandemics, and preparedness.

Our event will feature four presentations followed by a panel discussion, which will offer diverse perspectives on the topic.

First, we will journey back in time to the maritime-borne cholera outbreak that ravaged Bergen in 1848-49. Professor Morten Hammerborg will guide us through the origins and repercussions of this historical epidemic, shedding light on the unique challenges faced by a coastal city during such harrowing times.

Next, we'll turn our attention to the future with Professor Noel Keenlyside, who will discuss new opportunities to enhance our predictions of pandemics. With climate change altering the global landscape and potentially increasing our exposure to pathogens, Professor Keenlyside will explore how climate prediction can inform preparedness efforts and mitigate the risk of future pandemics.

Following this, Professor Oddrun Anita Gudbrandsen will lead us in an exploration of the intersection between food, pandemics, and the ocean. By examining how dietary choices may influence susceptibility to viral infections, Professor Gulbrandsen will provide valuable insights into preventive measures we can take to safeguard public health.

Lastly, we'll hear from Professor Preben Avitsland who will underscore the significance of the ocean in the emergence of new epidemics, a topic that intertwines microbiology, climate science, and zoology. While the rainforest remains the most probable source of new pandemic viruses, the ocean's role should not be overlooked. Ocean warming may have adverse consequences, as evidenced by recent events along the coasts of Norway and Sweden, where bacterial infections from seawater have been reported.

Professor Esperanza Diaz, leader of the Pandemic Centre, will moderate the debate following the four presentations above.
