Hovedinnhold

The three decades long authoritarian rule of president Omar al-Bashir is over. What now, Gunnar Sørbø?

President Bashir came to power through a coup in 1989, and has since ruled Sudan with an iron fist.

In December 2018, protests against the president began in several towns, sparked after an increase in bread prices, growing into nationwide rallies demanding that Bashir steps down.

During the days leading up to Bashir’s removal, tens of thousands of peaceful protesters surrounded the army headquarters in Khartoum for days on end. On April 11, 2019, he was removed from office by military and detained. What caused his fall, and who will replace him?

Gunnar Sørbø, senior researcher and former director of the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), is a social anthropologist with extensive international experience from research, research management and consultancy work. He is one of Norway’s leading experts on Sudan and South Sudan.

Fresh croissants, coffee and tea will be served.

Welcome!
