Fuelled by humiliation over loss of territory at independence and Hindu anxieties over minoritization, Hindu nationalism now dominates the political scene in India. Its main political party – the Bharatiya Janata Party – enjoys a comfortable majority in the Parliament, which gives it a unique window of opportunity to implement far-reaching changes.

Which long-term changes do Hindu nationalists envision? Which anxieties are they rooted in? And which forms of excess has the new ideological normal resulted in, whether by state or non-state actors?
