Lawyers and Lawbooks: Compiling the Law in Medieval Wales
The medieval Welsh lawbooks have a long history, and were revised and updated throughout the time the Welsh law, ‘Cyfraith Hywel’, was operational in medieval Wales. After giving a brief background, this paper will examine the way one group of lawtexts was rewritten, looking particularly at the work of a legal scholar working in the vicinity of the church of Clynnog Fawr in north Wales. Focus will be given on particular sections and the way he adapted and rewrote existing sections of law to create a workable and sensible text.
Sara Elin Roberts is Honorary Professor at the School of Welsh, Bangor University. She has worked extensively on medieval Welsh literature, culture, and history, and has specialized on the law of medieval Wales and has a particular interest in the development of the texts and the manuscripts of Welsh law. Her most recent monograph on the subject, The Growth of Law in Medieval Wales, was published by Boydell in 2022, and was awarded the Hywel Dda Prize.
