So little is known about methane seeps… In part 3, researchers will use the GOSars state-of-the-art technology to sample, map and document some methane seeps located on Norway’s continental shelf. What is making the pockmarks and the pingos? Is it possible for the seeps to be a future energy source?

28.07.2008 The main purpose of this part of the cruise is to study pockmarks in the Nyeggaarea, at the continental shelf outside Trøndelag. The study, which is a part of the GANS project, is to take samples from ocean bed, and study de marine fauna with help from the ROV.

Happy days at the microlaboratory

04.08.2008 The waves won’t stop rolling, even though the sun is shining from a quite bright sky. Therefore this is yet another day without ROV-dives. More samples are taken up by the other instruments, from proximally the same area as yesterday.

Another day with more samples

06.08.2008 A little rain in the morning, but the weather stay calm throughout the day. More discoveries were made today, which made the geologists happy. During the night the TOPAS profiles ran through most of the pockmarks. With Berit and Mats monitoring, they made 100 km of mapping.
