Master Project

The recent discovery of oil and gas in Ghana has sparked high development and economic expectations in various sectors of the Ghanaian economy. The fisheries sector is no exception. Since fishing and oil exploration are intertwined in complex relationships, there have been speculations that the exploration and production of oil and gas may likely promote economic, social, environmental and cultural changes within the various fishing communities. These changes can be positive or negative. My master project therefore seeks to explore the impacts the oil and gas exploration has on the livelihoods of men and women working in the fisheries. The area of study is Shama, a coastal town located about 20 kilometers east away from Takoradi, the new oil city.

Field Work

Experiences from field work were a mixture of excitement and adventure. I traveled to new places and participated in various activities. In all, the field work facilitated my ability to understand theoretical studies though practical experiences.
