Master class - Marianne Gunderson (Digital kultur)
Minna Ruckenstein (University of Helsinki) is giving a master class for PhD candidate Marianne Gunderson (LLE) based on material from Gunderson's thesis “Algorithmic visions: agency, imaginaries, & the self in socio-technical situations”
Hovedinnhold
Abstract:
This PhD thesis investigates how algorithmic systems are integrated in how we see the world and how algorithms affect how we see ourselves and each other. By examining the distribution of agency between humans and machine vision technologies, it proposes the concept of the socio-technical situation, which as a methodological tool hones in on the moments in which specific technologies are seen to make a difference in unfolding events. Through close readings of representations of augmented reality in science fiction, the thesis argues that our imaginaries of algorithmic systems projected onto our field of vision provide critiques of how these systems encode and reify normative and hierarchical structures. Finally, it analyses how people see themselves in the algorithmic "For You Page" on TikTok, arguing that the algorithmic feed functions as an optical device through which people experience intimacy with the algorithm and co-construct their identities. These three cases each illustrate three facets of what I call 'algorithmic vision': firstly, the liveliness of machine vision technologies, which perform a wide variety of actions in the situations in which they are involved; secondly, how algorithmic systems can structure how bodies are interpreted; and thirdly, how algorithmic systems can function as subject-shifting optical devises.
