RoMOMatteR: a project to empower Roma girls
RoMOMatteR is a transnational project which aims to empower Roma girls’ mattering in order to help them envision their own futures and choose motherhood only if and when they are ready.

We congratulate Associate Professor Gaby Ortiz-Barreda for being part of RoMOMatteR, a project financed by The Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme 2014-2020, DG Justice.
Roma teenage motherhood is deeply embedded in a tangle of multiple discrimination and used by certain sectors of European society to validate the rejection of Roma. It also impoverishes the lives of women and girls, increases the risks of mental and physical health, making them vulnerable to domestic violence, school dropout and precarious employment.
In this context, RoMOMatteR is a project that aims to empower Roma girls’ mattering to reproductive justice and to map the contextual determinants that might influence teenage motherhood among them.
Based on Participatory Action Research, this multidisciplinary project sees Roma girls as active players participating in all actions and decisions affecting them. RoMOMatteR targets Roma girls (among 10-14 years old) and key stakeholders like key Roma women or providers of public services. The project will map community assets, narratives and evidences to empower Roma girls’ mattering linked to reproductive justice, and develop critical thinking on Roma girls’ mattering linked to reproductive justice.
The University of Seville, the World Health Organization collaborating center on Social Inclusion and Health (University of Alicante), the University of Bucharest and the University of Buckinghamshire are among this project's partner organizations.
