National Science Week 2019

The CALENDARS team had a stand at the National Science Week expo (Forskningstorget) in Bergen in September.

By the end of the day the rack was full of primstavs made by childeren passing by the stand. The illustrations on the primstavs showed a wide variety of representations of the seasons in Bergen today

Here they did a pilot in testing the method of using the primstav as a tool for collecting representations of seasons by the citizens of Bergen.

We asked the questions:

How are the seasons changing?
How many seasons do we actually have in Bergen?
Why do we divide the year as we do and how could we do it differently?
Has it always been like this and will we have other seasons in the future?

The people that came to the CALENDARS stand at the expo got to make their own primstav based on a template made of paper provided by the team.

The stand must be said to be a success as we after two days on the stand had two full racks of `primstavs` providing us with a lot of information about how the notion of seasons were represented by the citizens of Bergen today.

The team is now working with how to develop this method further for work with stakeholder groups and institutions in Bergen.

National Science Week

National Science Week in Norway (Forskningsdagene) is a nationwide event held every year to make science and research available to the public.
Research and knowledge institutions throughout Norway have an opportunity to participate and provide the general public with new insight into what they do.
Events range from science expos, demonstrations, lectures, «stand-up scientist» performances, exhibits and discussions, to tours, information stands, and cultural and hands-on activities.
The National Science Week in Norway has emerged as Scandinavia’s foremost arena for publicly-targeted information about science and research activities, with events taking place at locations throughout the entire country.
