Key Figures from the Doctoral Survey 2019

The Doctoral Survey 2019, conducted by NIFU – Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education, highlights several important findings:

Employment: 94% of PhD candidates were employed one year after completing their doctorate.
Sector Distribution: 58% worked in the university and college sector, 22% in the research institute sector, and 20% in private industry.

New Regulations: The revised regulations under the University and University College Act, which came into effect this year, aim to ensure that doctoral candidates become aware of the broad applicability of their research competence — including careers “in other sectors where research expertise is required.”

In a knowledge-based society with high demands for advanced skills, a doctoral education is highly attractive across many sectors. As illustrated above, while there are disciplinary differences, the overall picture shows that approximately half of PhD graduates pursue careers outside academia, in a variety of sectors.

To support informed career choices, the term obligatory work has been replaced with career-promoting work. In addition, all candidates should have access to career support and guidance, as well as a career development plan that extends beyond the PhD trajectory.

At UiB Ferd, you can explore the career services offered by the University of Bergen and learn what support is available within your own academic environment.
