Creating Space for Body and Mind

On December 5th, the exhibition Creating Space for Body and Mind opened at the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Building (Realfagbygget). A learning center is to be built at the site, adapted to modern ways of learning, and art students were tasked with providing input and ideas to this process.

Hovedinnhold

The result is ten projects that represent very different approaches to architecture. The starting point was a respect for the building, which is heavy, grey, structured and static. Some of the art projects focus on what the building lacks, such as light, airiness, intimacy, movement and color. Others play in accord with the architecture, for instance by bringing out the characteristics of texture, light and shadow in the concrete. A third group invents new scenarios, playing with a variety of possibilities of what may come to be.

The exhibition was juried by four professors from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design: Kari Dyrdal, Mette L’Orange, Gerd Tinglum and Eamon O’Kane; the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Bjørn Åge Tømmerås; and Professor Siri Meyer from the Aesthetic Committee. Four first prizes were awarded:

Jacob Alrø for the project Reflecting on the States of Becoming

Noomi Louise Gjerde for the project The Wall

Wain Marriott for the project Replication of a former Structure

Egil Olav Paulsen for the project Lethe

The collaboration between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Bergen Academy of Art and Design has received support from the Aesthetic Committee.
