Norway has a long history of being a marine nation. Its unique location, with close access to deep open ocean, places it in a leading position internationally for marine research.

With its unexplored expanses and resource potential, there is growing interest in learning more about the deep sea. The Norwegian government has expressed a wish that Bergen develop a marine cluster.
In addition, the government is supporting the establishment of world-class, modern infrastructure for deep sea research. In 2013, funds were allocated for an important infrastructure element – a research-dedicated Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) capable of diving to 6000m, which enables it to potentially explore 99% of the globe’s ocean floor.
The ROV is operated by the Norwegian Marine Robotics Facility, jointly run by the University of Bergen (UiB), the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and the Christian Michelsen Institute (CMI). It will be a vital piece of deep sea research infrastructure for researchers throughout Norway.
