Silje Mæland er utdannet fysioterapeut ved University of Bradford, Storbritannia og MSc (2007) og PhD (2013) ved Universitetet i Bergen/ Uni Research Helse. 

Avhandlingen hennes har tittelen: «Sick leave for patients with severe subjective health complaints. Challenges in general practice.»

Forskningsinteresser i dag dreier seg rundt: Arbeid og helse, herunder sykefravær, arbeidsevne og retur til arbeid, Legers og andre aktørers vurdering av pasienter med tanke på sykefravær og diagnosesetting, Ny medisinsk vurdering, Subjektive helseplager i pasientpopulasjoner (Ehler Danlos syndrom, Vestibulære sykdommer, Cerebral Parese). Hun er også involvert i prosjekt knyttet til fosterbarns oppfølging i primærhelsetjenesten.  

Hun har tiligere jobbet som førsteamanuensis ved Høgskulen på Vestlandet (HVL) hvor hun underviste i nevrologisk fysioterapi. I 2014 ble Mæland tildelt «Pris for fremragende undervisning» ved HVL.
