Ocean fossils reveal future climate change

Funded by an ERC Starting Grant and support from the Bergen Research Foundation (BFS), researcher Nele Meckler at the Department of Earth Science at the University of Bergen (UiB) is developing a technique for reconstructing temperatures in the past, by using fossil shells from the ocean.

Born 1977 in Germany.
Researcher at the Department of Earth Science at the University of Bergen since 2015.
Postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at ETH Zürich, Switzerland 2010-2015 and at California Institute of Technology, USA 2007-2009.
PhD in 2006 from Universität Bayreuth, Germany.
Master´s degree in Geoecology in 2002 from Universität Bayreuth, Germany.
She receives support in the form of an ERC Starting Grant and a Bergen Research Foundation Recruitment Grant.
Meckler is conducting research on the reconstructions of ocean temperatures millions of years ago from marine micro fossils (foraminifera).
Her C4T research project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) with a Starting Grant the CLIP project is funded by BFS and UiB.
Meckler analyses fossils from marine sediments from the ocean floor.
She has focused on new techniques for reconstructing past temperatures, most importantly clumped isotope thermometry.
