Hovedinnhold

The funding has been granted through the CET Accelerator Funding Programme to build a Net Zero Healthcare Coalition.

A Norwegian net zero healthcare hub will be jointly based between the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation (CET) and BCEPS at the University of Bergen, supported by a multidisciplinary coalition of researchers, clinicians and health policy makers in Norway.

The Project

The project will develop a national strategy for decarbonising Norwegian health care while maintaining and improving health outcomes. Despite healthcare emissions being substantial, health has mostly been sidelined from broader climate discourse. Effective climate action within the health sector could have a multiplying effect on reducing carbon emissions while sending a powerful message to wider society.

Below is an overview of the project aims and objectives as presented in the funding application:

Aims:

  1. To build a coalition of researchers, clinicians and policy makers using interdisciplinary experience and expertise to create a strategy for decarbonising Norwegian healthcare while maintaining and improving health outcomes.
  2. To establish a national net zero healthcare hub which coordinates work with major partners including the University of Bergen, Norwegian Institute of Public Health and clinical leadership.

Objectives:

  1. Form a 'Norwegian net zero healthcare' hub jointly based between the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation (CET) and the Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting (BCEPS) at the University of Bergen.
  2. Build up a multidisciplinary coalition of researchers, clinicians and health policy makers in Norway with a shared interest in decarbonising Norwegian healthcare
  3. Produce a series of briefing summaries describing healthcare-related carbon emissions in Norway, clearly outlining scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from the Norwegian healthcare sector and sketching out the different pathways to reaching net zero.
  4. Develop a plan, including a timeline, key partners, research gaps and funding options, for producing a Norwegian net zero healthcare strategy
