Marine Geological Cruise Report from The North Sea: Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø III
In June 2022, geologists from the Department of Earth sciences, associated with the Bergen Offshore Wind Centre, sailed on a scientific cruise to Utsira Nord and Sørlige North Sea II to collect data that will be used to map the sea bottom conditions in the areas opened for offshore energy production. Short summary:
The cruise was carried out 10 - 20 June on the research vessel G.O. Sars, which is owned by the Institute of Marine Research and the University of Bergen.
The scientific crew consisted of professor Haflidi Haflidason (cruise leader), researcher Jo Brendryen (assistant cruise leader), Hannah Petrie (scholarship), as well as six engineers, two master's candidates and two bachelor's candidates.
The cruise is part of the Akademia project “Marine geological sea bottom surveys for offshore wind farms”. The project will map how geological information can contribute to a better understanding of foundations for wind turbines at sea, and it was therefore natural to collect samples and data from the two opened areas for offshore renewable energy production, Utsira Nord and Sørlige North Sea II.
The following data were collected during the trip:
- 13 Vibro cores, 10 Gravity cores, 3 Calypso cores
- 1 CTD station
- A total of 1,600 km with TOPAS lines (700 km from Utsira Nord and 900 km from Sørlige Nordsjø II).
