Abstract: The gut microbiota constitutes the largest organ in the body, comprising about 100 000 billion bacteria, ten times the number of human cells in the body. Recent advances suggest that the microbiota not only has an impact on metabolism and the immune system, but is a major player in the development of multiple diseases. This talk gives an introduction to the gut microbiota in health and disease, scientific methods and challenges - and may offer a new view on several common health problems and how to solve them.
