Accommodation and UiB Guesthousing

Who can book accommodation?  The UiB department, institute or centre affiliated with the guest researcher or new international employee is responsible for making reservations via the electronic application form.

When and for how long?  Upon availability housing is offered for stays between 3 weeks and 6 months, with a maximum pre-booking period of 6 months. Subject to availability and short notice, other UiB guests may also apply for stays of 3 weeks to 1 month.

How to book? Bookings must be made by the affiliated UiB department or faculty using the electronic application form, accessible only via the UiB network or VPN. Billing information must be provided at the time of booking.

Cancellations - Cancellations must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the scheduled arrival date. Late cancellations will incur a fee equivalent to one month's rent.

Early termination - A fee may apply if the contract is terminated before the agreed end date. A four-week notice period is required.

Before leaving, please ensure that:

• All personal belongings are packed.
• No food items are left in the kitchen.
• The keycard is placed on the desk or table.
• Leave your name on the mail list or mail box. Any mail will be forwarded to you.

Important address updates (free and necessary):

• National Registry: Update your address via Moving - The Norwegian Tax Administration (skatteetaten.no)
• Self-service portal: Your address will update automatically based on the National Registry. Please verify that the change are registered.
• Posten: Notify Posten of your new address via posten.no/en Take advantage of the free 2 month mail forwarding.
• Other providers: Some services, such as mobile phone companies, may require you to update your address manually.

Smart tip: Once your bank account is set up, register incoming invoices as e-invoices or Autogiro to simplify payments.
Sign up for Digipost – Secure and simple digital mail and receive digital letters from public and private entities, such as specialists, hospitals, municipality and more. 

Please note: Use your personal email address, not your UiB email address, when communicating with public authorities. This ensures you will continue to receive important communications after leaving UiB.

Rental contract for private housing

• Always obtain full written contract that include contact details for the property owner.
• Read your tenancy agreement carefully and make sure you understand the type and duration of the contract. Early termination may result in fees or other additional costs.
• Be aware of your maintenance responsibilities as a tenant. See Section 5-3 of the Norwegian Tenancy Act and may be specified further in your tenancy agreement.

• Deposit - Never pay the deposit into a private bank account. It must be placed in a separate deposit account in your name, typically arranged by the property owner. Withdrawals from this account require the consent of both you and the property owner.A Norwegian BankID is required to sign the deposit account agreement and transfer the deposit. If you do not have a Norwegian BankID, alternative temporary solutions may be available. Please contact housing@uib.no for more information.
  Any interest accrued on the deposit account belongs to the tenant.
• Home content insurance protects your valuables, such as furniture, sports equipment, clothes and electronic devises. This insurance covers damage to belongings in the event of fire, water damage, burglary etc. This can be purchased through your Norwegian trade union, your bank, or insurance companies in Norway. • Electricity: Electricity is often not included and must be arranged separately by the tenant.
