Accommodation and UiB Guesthousing
Information about UiB Guest Housing and practical guidance for finding private accommodation. Guest housing is a short-term offer for visiting researchers and newly hired international employees at UiB. It serves as a transitional arrangement and is centrally located on campus, close to Bergen city centre.

Booking
Who can book accommodation? The UiB department, institute or centre affiliated with the guest researcher or new international employee is responsible for making reservations via the electronic application form
When and for how long? Upon availability housing is offered for stays between 3 weeks and 6 months, with a maximum pre-booking period of 6 months. Subject to availability and short notice, other UiB guests may also apply for stays of 3 weeks to 1 month.
How to book? Bookings must be made by the affiliated UiB department or faculty using the electronic application form, accessible only via the UiB network or VPN. Billing information must be provided at the time of booking.
Cancellations - Cancellations must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the scheduled arrival date. Late cancellations will incur a fee equivalent to one month's rent.
Early termination - A fee may apply if the contract is terminated before the agreed end date. A four-week notice period is required.

Leaving UiB housing
Checkout time: 10:00 AM
Before leaving, please ensure that:
- All personal belongings are packed.
- No food items are left in the kitchen.
- The keycard is placed on the desk or table.
Important address updates (free and necessary):
- National Registry: Update your address via Moving - The Norwegian Tax Administration (skatteetaten.no)
- Self-service portal: Your address will update automatically based on the National Registry. Please verify that the change has been registered.
- Posten: Notify Posten of your new address via posten.no/en
- Other providers: Some services, such as mobile phone companies, may require you to update your address manually.
Smart tip: Once your bank account is set up, register incoming invoices as e-invoices or Autogiro to simplify payments.
Please note: Always use your personal email address when contacting public offices. Do not use your UiB email for this purpose.

Rental contract for private housing
- Always obtain full contact details for the property owner.
- Read carefully and understand your tenancy agreement, especially the type and duration of the contract. Early termination may result in fees or additional costs.
- Familiarize yourself with your responsibilities as a tenant.

- Deposit - According to the Tenancy Act, the deposit must not be paid into a private account. It should be placed in a separate bank account in your name, usually set up by the property owner. This account must require two signatures (yours and the owner's) for withdrawals.A Norwegian BankID is required to sign and make the deposit.If you do not have a Norwegian BankID, contact housing@uib.no for assistance.
- Home content insurance protects your valuables, such as furniture, sports equipment, clothes and electronic devises. This insurance covers damage to belongings in the event of fire, water damage, burglary etc. This can be purchased through your Norwegian trade union, your bank, or insurance companies in Norway. - Electricity: Electricity is often not included and must be arranged separately by the tenant.
