Who can be members of Grieg Research School?

Candidates from the five owner institutions (Stord/Haugesund University College, Volda University College, Bergen University College, University of Stavanger, University of Bergen/Grieg Academy) will automatically be accepted as members of Grieg Research School. This includes both PhD candidates with a project related to music and candidates who are taking part in other relevant research qualification programs. The latter includes candidates in “førstelektorløp” and in “Norwegian Artistic Research Fellowship Programme" (Stipendprogrammet for kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid)

Candidates from other institutions (nationally and internationally) can be affiliated with the research school by subscribing to our address list and receive news and information about seminars. For these external candidates it will be possible to participate in specific courses and seminars arranged by GRS, by paying a participation fee per event. Contact us for more information.

For those of you who already have a membership in another research school, it can be useful to know that there are no restrictions saying that you can only be member of one research school. However, if you would like to be connected to the PhD program at the University of Bergen or if you want to have a supervisor at the University in Bergen in addition to the one(s) that you have at the institution which accepted you as a candidate, this would require formal agreements (such as a cotutelle agreement).

Our interest is to build up a vital research school and research network. We would therefore like to invite candidates in all phases of the PhD process to join the research school; whether you are in the very beginning or close to the end of the process. If the latter is the case, the defence of the thesis could be announced by Grieg Research School, if the candidate would wish so. In this way forthcoming defences could be exciting events for all members of the research school, contributing to the building of an academic milieu.

What are the advantages of membership?

As a member of Grieg Research School you will be part of a vital and creative interdisciplinary environment, with lectures of leading researchers regionally and internationally, and with space for academic discussion of your own work. You will have free participation in all courses and events arranged by GRS.

What are the obligations connected to membership?

Usually candidates are welcome to and expected to attend two GRS courses a year. Candidates do present their own work at least once a year and are invited to contribute in the academic discussions of each seminar.

What does it cost to be a member?

Membership is free for candidates and staff from the owner institutions. Owner institutions are: Stord/Haugesund University College, Volda University College, Bergen University College, University of Stavanger, University of Bergen/Grieg Academy.

Candidates from other institutions (nationally and internationally) cannot be members, but they can participate in specific courses and seminars arranged by GRS, by paying a participation fee per event.

What does it cost to participate in specific events?

As a member of Grieg Research School you will have free participation in all courses and events arranged by GRS.

For other candidates it will be possible to participate in specific courses and seminars arranged by GRS, by paying a participation fee per event. Today this fee is NOK 3000 (this might change).

What to do to be a member?

Candidates connected to the PhD program at the University of Bergen through the Grieg Academy will automatically be accepted as members of Grieg Research School in Interdisciplinary Music Studies. In order to become active members, these candidates notify us that they are interested in membership by sending an email to the coordinator.

Candidates affiliated to the other owner institutions but connected to other PhD programs, can become active members by sending an email to the coordinator.
