Introduction

Our two-year master's programme in biology offers teaching from world-class scientists within their fields. UiB is Norway's largest marine university, with research and education of a high international standard and several world leading research environments. Bergen's location offers unique opportunities to use nature as a classroom and we emphasise a hands-on approach by extensive use of data analysis, field work and interactive discussions with our staff and students from around the world.

The master's programme in biology offers various areas of specialisations within the biology field. The first year you will take courses that amount to 60 ECTS credits, while the whole second year is devoted to working with your master's thesis that also amounts to 60 ECTS credits. This gives you the chance to focus on your own independent scientific work for a whole year.

Master thesis

As a master's student at UiB you will belong to an academic group that provides your teaching and supervision, including numerous resources to support your studies.

  • The master's thesis makes up half the programme, one year. (In many cases, the completed research will be suited for primary publication in a scientific journal.)
  • You will find a thesis research topic in collaboration with academic staff. The available topics are decided from available supervisors and other resources. We encourage you to include your major areas of research interest in your application, so that potential supervisors are made aware of these.
  • We encourage all our master's students to be proactive and contact academic staff during the first year of the programme and to start contemplating about a subject for the master's thesis in year two. You will receive guidance and advice throughout the second year from your academic supervisor.

In general, thesis research topics are encouraged to contain field work, laboratory or computer analysis work, statistical or conceptual synthesis, and a write-up that puts the study and its findings into the context of previously published research.

Career opportunities

Graduates from this programme are eligible for a wide range of career paths in both public and private sector. Our master's programme in biology makes you eligible to work at for instance consultancy agencies in various ministries and directorates in counties or municipalities, or in biological or environmental research institutes and industries, such as fish farming companies etc..

Our graduates have landed jobs as for instance:

  • Aquaculture technician at Sterling White Halibut
  • Conceptual developer at Nature:xpo
  • Advisor at the Norwegian Environment Agency

Teaching 

You can qualify to work as a teacher in secondary schools if you complete one year of practical pedagogy training.

Research

You can apply for a PhD degree at UiB. or another institution if you are interested in pursuing a career within research.

Admission Requirements

In order to qualify for admission to this programme you must have completed a first degree (bachelor's degree) in biology or equivalent. Your academic performance in biology is essential when considering whether you qualify for admission. We encourage you to include your major areas of research interest and area of spesialization in your application, so that potential supervisors are made aware of these.
