Writing about death and diseases
Kari Wærness, professor emerita at the Department of Sociology, has co-edited a book on care for the seriously sick and dying in Ghana.
The book "Care of the Seriously Sick and Dying - Perspectives from Ghana" is edited together with Prof. Christine Oppong and Phyllis Antwi, both of the University of Ghana. This publication gives insight into how care of the sick and dying is characterised by ambivalence, variation, uncertainty and lack of resources in a society that is rapidly changing. These discussions are also relevant to dilemmas found in other developing countries and in the west, where multicultural communities have to take into account variations in tradition and attitude towards and increasing number of older and seriously ill people.
