The Government's "requirement that all universities, alone or together with others, within two years have established merit systems that contribute to the appreciation of the work to develop good teaching" (Meld. St. 16) was followed up by the University Board, Case 60 / 17. It was decided that UiB will introduce the merit scheme Excellent Teacher and Teaching Environment, and in the Faculty Board, Case 19/36, it was decided to initiate the scheme Excellent Teaching Practitioner at KMD.

In the program the faculty will reward quality teaching with the pedagogical competence ‘Excellent Teaching Practitioner(s)/Excellent Teacher(s)’. Although the program maintains that education and research are of equal importance we hope that through increasing the recognition of and attention to our teaching the program contribute to the further development of excellence in our teaching quality. To emphasize that teaching and the quality of education are a collective responsibility and dependent on good collaboration the program will also recognize teaching groups/teams. Although our teaching environment has an artistic focus, it is exploratory and critical with strength in our great affinity with our students. We hope to highlight and document these qualities through the ETP scheme.
