Application for admission to the PhD programme in artistic research

Applies only to applicants with external funding. All others are automatically admitted to the PhD programme upon employment as a research fellow at the University of Bergen.

Preparations

The admission criteria for the various PHD programmes at UiB are different. Therefore, it is important that the applicant follows the guidance developed for the specific program.

The application requires a lot of documentation, and the application process requires that the documentation is uploaded in a specific order before you can proceed to the next page of the application form. Therefore, it will be advantageous to gather the relevant documentation before starting the actual application form.

Remember to name the files according to their content. Allowed file types are pdf, jpg, txt, png, and jpeg.

Tip: You can upload fictitious documents along the way, as long as you remember to replace them before submitting the application. Incomplete applications may be rejected on formal grounds.
 

Checklist of what you need to have ready before applying:

Education

  • Diploma/documentation of your master's degree, with correct translation if needed, and an updated CV.
  • Master's thesis and, if applicable, a list of scientific productions should be attached.

Funding

  • Employment confirmation/contract with an external institution.
  • A financing plan with a budget must be provided.

PhD Project

  • The project description should contain up to 5 pages and 20,000 characters.

Supervisor

  • Proposal for at least one supervisor with confirmation.

2. User Guide for Applying to the PhD Programme at KMD

At the University of Bergen, the research education is organized with separate PhD programmes for the various faculties. Since the admission criteria for the different programmes are different, it is important that the applicant follows the guidelines developed for the programme they are applying to.

In the information below, you will find the user guide for admission to the PhD programme in artistic research at KMD.

3. Personal Information

  • National Identification Number: Norwegian personal number (11 digits), D-number (11 digits), or date of birth (dd.mm.yyyy)
     
  • First Name: as it appears in the passport
     
  • Last Name: as it appears in the passport
     
  • Email: private email address
     
  • Legal Gender: male or female
     
  • Citizenship: mandatory
     
  • Mobile Phone: mandatory
     
  • Other Phone Number: not mandatory
     
  • Add Address: here we ask for the home address
     
  • Upload: A copy of the passport is mandatory for foreign citizens who do not have a Norwegian personal number or temporary
    Norwegian identification number, also called a D-number.

4. Education, CV, and Attachments

For admission to the PhD programme in artistic research at the University of Bergen, the applicant must normally have a five-year master's degree in performing or creative arts. The applicant must have completed a master's degree in art, music, design, or equivalent education, and the degree must be completed by the application deadline.

Scope of Master's Thesis, Research Line, or Main Thesis: 
In this field, you should register the scope of your master's thesis specified in study credits/ECTS or the number of semesters.

Here you should upload your attachments:

  • Diploma/documentation of your master's degree, in Norwegian or English
  • Updated CV
  • Attach documentation of your English proficiency if this is required in the job advertisement.

5. Funding

Funding is crucial to be able to start an organized doctoral education such as the PhD programme. PhD candidates do not have student status in Norway and therefore cannot receive support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen).

To qualify for admission to our PhD programme, you must document satisfactory funding for the entire duration of the research education, including living expenses and operational costs related to the research. It is not permitted to apply for admission for less than one year (provided that large parts of the project have been completed), nor for more than six years. At least 50% of the working time must be available for work on the doctoral project.

It is not possible to apply for admission based on private funds.

UiB as Employer:

Main Source of Funding: Choose the appropriate option. If "Other" is selected, a separate field for registration will appear.

Other Sources of Funding: Not mandatory. If "Other" is selected, a separate field for registration will appear.

Workplace: Name of the employer and contact information/reference.

Funding Period: Corresponding to what is provided in the documentation. This can be adjusted if the start is delayed.

Remarks: Feel free to use this field to provide information about the relationship between multiple sources of funding.

Is the position part of a larger research project? Provide the title of the project in a separate field that appears if the answer is yes.

Upload: Employment contract or proof of funding from all sources of funding. Must provide information about both salary and any operational funds. Operational funds are earmarked funds set aside to cover expenses directly related to the doctoral project, including, for example, fieldwork, scientific assistance, and stays abroad.

Employer outside UiB: 

Same as with UiB as the employer.

Other: 

  • If the workplace is not yet determined, please add a comment about this in the workplace field.
  • Indicate if the position is part of a larger research project; refer to the job advertisement for information.
  • Indicate if there is an agreement for (full/partial) external funding through another research environment.
  • A funding plan (budget) and proof of funding/employment contract must be uploaded.

6. Phd-project

Upload: Project description

The requirements for the project description are formulated in the faculty's Program Description, section 2.1.

Add Supervisor: The application requires you to provide the name of at least one supervisor.

Type of Supervisor: Normally, this is the main supervisor.

Affiliation: Normally, the main supervisor should be employed at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design.

First Name and Last Name:

Remark: For example, if there are deviations from the main rules mentioned above.

Upload: Declaration from the supervisor stating that they are familiar with the project and willing to be a supervisor.

Enter the name of the research school if applicable.

7. Training Component

Se Regulations § 7 og Programme Description section 3.6.

The education plan consists of an individual education plan (10 ECTS) and a mandatory interdisciplinary training component (20 ECTS) from National Research School for Artistic Research.

The final individual training plan must be developed in consultation with your supervisor after you have been admitted to the Ph.D. program and no later than three (3) months thereafter.

The plan should specify when the individual components will be carried out and their respective volumes. Any changes to the plan must be approved by the faculty.

8. Confirmation and Submission of Application

On this page, you will get an overview of all registered data and uploaded attachments, and you can choose to go into the different sections of the application to make changes.

After you have confirmed that the information is correct (check the box), click on "submit" to register the application with us. Once the application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation message where you will have the opportunity to download the application.

The email notified in the confirmation message will have the subject "Administrative Message" and the sender will be no-reply@uib.no. You will also find information about whom to contact with questions related to the case processing.
