Placement test
A placement test will help ensure that applicants for higher level Norwegian language courses may be offered the correct course level.

International employees, partners and international students who have already accquired some knowledge of Norwegian outside of the University of Bergen, may sign up for a placement test. External applicants (immigrants and refugees) should not register for the placement test. Elligible external applicants receive an invite to the placement test a week before the test.
International employees, partners and international students who have not already completed a Norwegian language course at UiB or another Norwegian university, must complete the test in order to be considered for NOR-U2, NOR-U3, NOR-U4 or NOR-NYN.
If you have completed a Norwegian language course at another Norwegian university, you might already be qualified for a higher level course. Please send an email, complete with documentation, to studynorwegian@uib.no.
Please note that the placement test
- is for internal use only
- is not graded (and you may not appeal your result)
- cannot replace an exam
- is not intended for students who have been enrolled in our courses previously (with a couple of exceptions)
The placement test results are valid for two semesters.
Placement test for employees and partners
International employees and partners of international employees may complete the test in June/December. Those unable to complete the test during the scheduled week will get a second chance in August/January. You may be asked to take the test even if you haven't registered for it.
The placement test is a 3 hour online written test that may be completed from home within the listed time period .
Applicants who must complete the placement test for admission, will receive a link to the placement test and further instructions to their registered email at the latest the same day that the placement test starts.
Applicants who complete the placement test will receive the results in the admissions information by email.

Placement test for international students
International students may complete the test in August (autumn) or January (spring).
The placement test is a 3 hour online written test that may be completed from home within the listed time period.
International students who have registered for and must complete the placement test, will receive a link to the placement test and further instructions to their registered email at the latest the same day that the placement test starts.
International students who have completed the placement test, will be notified about the result within 10 days after the placement test period, and will gain access to register in Studentweb for a course according to the placement test result.
