Placement test

If you have not completed a Norwegian language course at UiB previously, but would like to apply for a higher level course, you will have to complete a placement test.

Main content

Applicants who have already acquired some knowledge of Norwegian outside of the University of Bergen, may sign up for a placement test. The test will help ensure that you are offered the correct course level. International employees, partners and international students who have not already completed a Norwegian language course at UiB, must complete the test in order to be considered for NOR-U2, NOR-U3, NOR-U4 or NOR-UNN.

If you have completed a Norwegian language course at another Norwegian university, you might already be qualified for a higher level course. Please send an email, complete with documentation, to studynorwegian@uib.no.

Please note that the placement test

  • is for internal use only
  • is not graded (you may not appeal your result)
  • cannot replace an exam
  • is not intended for students who have been enrolled in our courses previously (with a couple of exceptions)

Students who qualify for a level through the placement test may be moved to another level after a couple of weeks. This is because language skills are better evaluated in class.

The placement test results are valid for two semesters.

Placement test for employees and partners

International employees and partners of international employees may complete the test in June/December. Those unable to complete the test during the scheduled week will get a second chance in August/January. You may be asked to take the test if we suspect that you have forgotten to register for it.

The placement test is an online, written, 3 hour test. Applicants may complete it from home.

Sign up for the test here. Please note that this is not an application form. You must still apply for admission to the Norwegian Language Courses in Søknadsweb.

Placement test for international students

International students may complete the test in June/August (autumn) or December/January (spring).

The placement test is an online, written, 3 hour test. Applicants may complete it from home.
