Perceptions of fairness accross diciplines

The event series ‘Let's be fair’ seeks to challenge established perceptions of what it means to be fair, and how justice and power affect development research.

Some of Norway's leading scientists from a number of disciplines will look at how they deal with ‘fairness’ in their research.

There will be debates and lectures seeking to challenge concept of fairness across the disciplines, from philosophy and psychology to economics, law and medicine.

Some events will be in Norwegian.

The events are free and open to all!

Kva er rettferd?

Omgrepet rettferd er eit av dei eldste i etikken og den politiske filosofien. Rettferd er eit omgrep som i sitt vesen innbyr til strid, utfordrar filosofLars Fr. H. Svendsen.

Lars Fr. H. Svendsen er professor i filosofi ved UiB. Han har mellom anna utgitt bøkene «Kjedsomhetens filosofi» (1999), «Kunst» (2000), «Ondskapens filosofi» (2001), «Mennesket, moralen og genene» (2001), «Hva er filosofi» (2003), «Mote» (2004), «Frykt» (2007), «Arbeidets filosofi» (2011) og «Frihetens filosofi»(2013).

Forfattar Øyvind Eggen presenterer boka 'Western Aid at a Crossroads: The End of Paternalism (2013)' og blir utfordra av Gunnar M. Sørbø. Debatten blir leia av Svein-Erik Helle (stipendiat i samanliknande politikk ved UiB).

Øyvind Eggen var forskar ved Norsk Utanrikspolitisk Institutt frå 2007 til 2012. Han er no fagdirektør for evaluering i Norad. Han har lang erfaring frå arbeid med, evaluering av og forsking på utviklings- og bistandsspørsmål. Kva er rettferdig fordeling, og kvifor er det viktig? Kan ein måle økonomisk rettferd?

Gunnar M. Sørbø er seniorforskar og tidlegare direktør ved Chr. Michelsens institutt. Han har lang erfaring frå evaluering av internasjonal bistand og utviklingspolitikk og har i mange år vore ein aktiv bidragsytar i debattar om ulike sider ved norsk bistand.

Kva er rettferdig fordeling, og kvifor er det viktig? Kan ein måle økonomisk rettferd? Lars Fr. H. Svendsen i samtale med Kalle Moene om ulike forståingar av økonomisk fordeling og rettferd.

Kalle Moene er professor ved Økonomisk institutt ved Universitetet i Oslo der han leiar ESOP (Equality, Social Organization and Performance). Moene sitt arbeidsfelt har mellom anna vore fordelingsspørsmål og samanlikning av økonomiske institusjonar, særskilt i arbeidsmarknaden.

How can we use economic experiments to help us understand people’s fairness preferences and how these preferences affect our choices? In this lecture, Bertil Tungodden provides illustrations of economic experiments, and asks the audience to test their own fairness preferences.

Bertil Tungodden is a Professor in economics and a co-director of the Choice Lab at the Department of Economics, NHH Norwegian School of Economics. Tungodden is also an associated researcher at CMI. He has mainly focused on behavioural economics, experimental economics, development economics, welfare economics and social choice theory.

Fairness and global inequality

There are huge differences between rich and poor people in the world. Major questions for economists, other social scientists and policymakers are "how large are these differences?" and "are they increasing or decreasing over time?" However, there is no consensus regarding how to answer these questions. Ingvild Almås gives her insight in this lecture.

Ingvild Almås is an Associate Professor in economics at the Department of Economics, NHH Norwegian School of Economics. She is also attached to The Choice Lab at NHH and ESOP at the University of Oslo as a researcher. Almås, the Nils Klim Prize winner in 2013, is primarily conducting research on cost-of-living and income measurement, experimental economics and fairness and redistribution.

Fairness and redistribution: U.S. vs. Europe

We know that the support for redistribution differs across countries. Specifically, we know that governments in Europe typically support more redistribution than the government in the United States. The question Alexander Cappelen asks in this lecture is why the support for redistribution is different.

Alexander Cappelen is Professor in economics and co-director of The Choice Lab at the Department of Economics, NHH Norwegian School of Economics. Cappelen has mainly focused on social choice theory, distributive justice, corporate governance and experimental economics in his research. He won Akademikerprisen in 2013.

Siri Gloppen i samtale med Jan Fridthjof Bernt om domstolen som forvaltar av rettferd.

Siri Gloppen er professor ved Institutt for samanliknande politikk ved UiB og forskar ved CMI. Gloppen har i si forsking særskilt konsentrert seg om forsking på rettsapparatet si sosiale og politiske rolle, demokratisering, og menneskerettigheiter i det austlege og sørlege Afrika.

Jan Fridthjof Bernt er professor i rettsvitskap ved UiB og tidlegare preses i Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi. Bernt har også vore leiar for styret ved CMI, for styret for Etikkprogrammet ved UiO, og for styret ved Holbergprisen. Han har óg vore rektor ved Universitetet i Bergen og prodekan ved Det juridiske fakultet.

Kva rolle spelar rettferd når helsetenester skal prioriterast? Opa førelesing med Ole Frithjof Norheim.

Ole Frithjof Norheim er professor ved Senter for internasjonal helse og Institutt for samfunnsmedisinske fag ved UiB. Han er også gjesteprofessor ved Harvard School of Public Health. Norheim sine forskingsinteresser er prioritering og rettferd i helsesektoren og medisinsk etikk. I juni 2013 vart han oppnemnd som leiar for eit offentleg utval som skal vurdere prioriteringar i helsesektoren.

Kvar er rettferda i rettsoppgjer? Erik Møse vil snakke om sine erfaringar som dommar ved FNs straffedomstol for Rwanda.

Høgsterettsdommar Erik Møse er dommar ved Den europeiske menneskerettsdomstol i Strasbourg. Han var medlem av FNs straffedomstol for Rwanda frå 1999-2009. Frå 1999-2003 var han visepresident, og frå 2003-2007 var han president.

Open lecture with Manuel Vásquez on challenging the laws and faith-based engagement with unauthorized immigration in the United States.

Manuel Vásquez is Professor of Religion at the University of Florida. His area of expertise is the intersection of religion, immigration and globalization in the Americas. In particular, he has focused on contemporary transnational religious networks across the hemisphere, with increasing interest in the comparative study of transnational religious dynamics in the ‘Global South’.
