Course description
Objectives and Content
This course will together with FARM290 give a more comprehensive understanding of pharmacology
- The course will explain the mechanism of action, usage, effects and interactions of the most commonly used drugs, along with knowledge on the relevant diseases.
- The course will make the students able to explain and advice on pharmacological therapy.
- The course will train the students in the ability to critically evaluate drug information and literature connected to pharmacology.
Content:
The course will focus on the most important diseases associated with the major organs, such as the cardiovascular system, endocrine organs, or the central nervous system. The teaching covers both pathophysiology and drug-based treatment, focusing on effect of the drugs, side-effects, guidance for treatment, and interactions with other drugs.
In addition to lectures, there will be three case-studies dealing with treatment of important diseases like cardiovascular diseases.
There will also be lectures in basic veterinary pharmacology.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
Upon completion of the course, the student has knowledge of:
- Principles of medicinal treatment of the most common illnesses in Norway
- Use of a broad spectrum of pharmaceuticals
- Interactions, contraindications, cautionary rules, excess dosage / toxicology in connection to pharmaceuticals.
- Distinct circumstances within pharmacology, such as pregnancy and breastfeeding, use of pharmaceuticals among children and the elderly.
- The most important pharmaceuticals, and the principles of medicinal treatment of illnesses in pets, livestock and fish
- How pharmaceutical measurements and other methods of analysis may be used for personal adaptations of pharmaceuticals and their dosage
Skills
Upon completion of the course, the student can:
- Demonstrate how to use pharmacological knowledge to give advice regarding medicinal treatment
- Gather information regarding pharmaceuticals and detail a pharmacological plan for cases with intermediate complexity
