Linguistics concerns questions relating to human language. You will receive an introduction to the concepts used for describing different languages, an introduction to a language which is completely unlike Norwegian, tuition about the connections between language and human understanding and thinking, and an introduction on how language can be analysed automatically by using a computer.

Did you know that...

Depending on how you count, there are around 6,000 languages in the world. Around 1,500 of these languages are concentrated in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

As many as 96% of the languages in the world are spoken by just 4% of the world's population. Roughly speaking, 25 languages die out each year. It is not just words which disappear when a language dies, but a whole way of looking at and understanding nature and culture.
