Kick-off for CODICUM: A research project exploring the medieval book
How were books and ideas shared in medieval Europe? What secrets do medieval manuscript fragments reveal about intellectual life in Northern Europe? These are some of the questions that the four scholars of the CODICUM team will explore over the next six years.

The project brings together an interdisciplinary team of experts from four Nordic universities and is funded by the European Research Council (ERC).
“We feel privileged to have the opportunity to study the unique remains of European book culture. Medieval literature and learning culture arose through collaboration across borders, and we continue this tradition by studying it across borders today,” says Åslaug Ommundsen, who leads the research project together with Tuomas Heikkilä, Matthew Collins, and Lars Boje Mortensen.
First Major Gathering and Opening Ceremony
The kick-off event brings together all project participants for the first time.
On Monday, 12 May, the project will be formally launched in The King Håkon’s Hall ("Håkonshallen"), with invited guests and speeches by the project leaders, UiB Rector Margareth Hagen, and the ERC Vice President Eystein Jansen.
