The Norwegian Programme for Capacity Building in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED) is launched by Norad, and will start in 2013. The aim of the programme is to strengthen higher education and research capacities in low and middle income countries (LMIC), with the ultimate goal of sustainable economic, social and environmental development.

At the deadline on 5 November, Norad had received around 300 applications for seed funding, the purpose of which is to develop applications for a main NORHED project. The main call was announced on 13 November 2012, with a final deadline of 15 March 2013.

The University of Bergen submitted seed funding applications within all six sub-programmes: Education and training; Health; Natural Resource Management, Climate Change and Environment; Democratic and Economic Governance; Humanities, Culture, Media and Communication; and Capacity Building in South Sudan.

The applications comprise partnerships with institutions in 20 countries of implementation, among them Tanzania, Vietnam, Cameroon, Nepal, Uganda, South Sudan, Bangladesh and Bolivia.

The result of the seed funding evaluation will be announced at norad.no/norhed on 30 November 2012.
