Sofia Ferreira - Fisheries Biology and Management

Sofia is working on her Masters in Fisheries Biology and Management, and is writing a thesis entitled "Vertical migration of the Norwegian spring-spawning herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.)"

Main content

The main objective of this study is to clarify which of the diel vertical migration patterns, types I or II, the Norwegian spring spawning herring, Clupea harengus, larvae perform along the Norwegian coast, and to test whether size related changes in vertical migration pattern of the larvae can be explained by vertical behaviour of predators.

Since vertical behaviour of fish larvae is often a trade off between various factors the vertical migration pattern will also be related to other biological factors such as prey availability and primary production in addition to physical factors such as temperature, salinity and light condition.
