Research Project
Main content
The project Education for democracy investigates the impact of education in areas of war, post-war or political conflict. The project is headed by Professor Kariane Westrheim and investigates how educational institutions and curricula often appear with “two faces”. International research shows how educational institutions, curricula and teachers are used by governments and power groups to assimilate and suppress the population in such regions. But formal and informal education can also be a tool in democratisation and reconciliation processes in societies spoiled by war and conflict.
