Medical optics

In this group we are working on developing an existing instrument prototype which is used in non-invasive diagnostics of skin diseases, like skin cancer. The prototype was developed by the ph.d. students Lu Zhao and Kristian P. Nielsen, who also have carried out clinical tests of the instrument and method for years.

The principle of the instrument is that the skin is illuminated with light of different wave lengths that interacts with the skin tissue through absorption and scattering. The light reflected from the skin contains valuable information that is used in diagnosing for example skin cancer.
