Opportunities for VET apprentices
Gatherings
We aim to create a strong environment – both professionally and socially. That’s why we focus on building a sense of community among apprentices across different trades. Through professional and social gatherings, you will get to know and collaborate with all the other apprentices.
Examples of gatherings include kick‑off days, health, safety and environment (HSE) courses, job‑seeking workshops, as well as Christmas and summer celebrations.
Professional Development
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will gradually take on more independent work and gain valuable hands‑on experience. You will be supported by your dedicated professional supervisor, who has extensive experience in the trade and industry.
We provide training and trust. As an apprentice at UiB, you will be integrated into the organisation, participate in teams and professional communities, and be given responsibility for tasks that other employees also perform – tasks that are essential to the day‑to‑day operation of the university. We facilitate strong professional development and work to help you become a skilled and confident professional.
Job Application Courses
Each year, we organise job application courses for our apprentices. These cover the entire application process – from what to consider before applying for a job to interview training. To get the most out of the course, apprentices are welcome to participate every year during their apprenticeship at UiB.
Exchange Opportunities
As an apprentice at UiB, you have the opportunity to take part in an exchange abroad during your apprenticeship. You will continue to receive your salary while on exchange, even if you are also awarded a grant from Vestland County.
Opportunities
UiB is a large education and research institution – which also means many opportunities for those who take initiative. You will have the chance to build networks, attend courses and events, and much more.

As a UiB apprentice, you can take advantage of the same welfare benefits offered to employees. These include, among others:
- Exercise during working hours (by agreement with your manager)
- Discounts at Sammen fitness centres
- Discounted cinema tickets
- Access to company cabins
- …and much more

Flexible working hours
At UiB, the state flexible time scheme is practiced in the following way:
Core time (Kjernetid)
Core time is working time during which all employees must normally be present.
The core time is from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
Flex time (Fleksitid)
Flextime is the period of time when the individual can decide for themselves when to start/stop their work, within the framework of what has been agreed with superiors. Apprentices must clarify how they can use flextime, within the work tasks they have at any given time.
Flextime is outside core time, from 6.00 AM and until 21.00 PM Monday to Friday.
The terms and conditions for flexible working hours follow from the Special Agreement on flexible working hours in the state.
Why do we want to hire VET apprentices?
At UiB there is a long and good tradition of participating in and taking responsibility for training by taking in apprentices and following them up.
This is something we think is both fun - and important! Apprentices are an important community resource that we must look after and promote. And our experience is that apprentices can bring new knowledge into the company.
The video below also paints a good picture of the fact that good craftsmanship is so much more than what we first think about.
Life without craftsmanship
You can get a VET apprenticeship
- At an institute
where research and teaching takes place. - At a faculty
in av larger administrative community.. - In a central administrative department
with special tasks for the entire university.
