Veljko Lipovac is joining the CSD

Veljko Lipovac is a new Ph.D. student at the Department of Mathematics. We decided to met him to see if we could find out a bit more about the person and the new Ph.D. project.

Veljko, Welcome to the University of Bergen.

Thank you very much, I'm looking forward to my stay here.

Since most of us don’t know you well, can you tell us a bit about your background?

Gladly. I was raised in Austria after my parents emigrated from the Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is also here, at the Graz University of Technology, where I've finished my studies in mathematics. During my master studies I had the opportunity to start specializing on engineering mathematics. From the beginning it was quite clear to me, that I am enjoying the nature-related side of mathematics the most. Prior to this position I was working for three years in a collaborative project between the local Institute for Automotive Engineering and the company Magna Steyr, during which I was programming various software packages for the industrial partner and during which I was also able to finish my master thesis in the fields of control theory and multibody dynamics. Since then I was employed as a researcher there.

Why did you choose to pursue a PhD?

Because I enjoy this type of work. In the previously mentioned project, I was working on specialized classes of solvers for ODEs. Modelling, programming and evaluating physical simulations made me realize, this is something I want to do.

Your PhD project is part of the Center for Modelling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics. Can you tell us a little bit about your project?

The official title of the description was "Mathematical and Numerical Modelling of Process-Structure Interaction in Fractured Geothermal Systems". There is a wide range of topics which need to be covered. Some include multiphase flows involving critical pressure conditions and some include contact mechanics and related seismic activities. I'm very lucky to enter the project at an early stage. This way I have the opportunity to help shape the course of my work under the guidance of Professor Inga Berre, Professor Florin Radu and Omar Duran. All these topics will be unbelievably exciting to dig into!
