CO2 leakage risk through remobilized Cenozoic sediments in the Northern North Sea

Hovedinnhold

Prosjektbeskrivelse
CO2 storage in the subsurface is being implemented as an important measure to combat climate change. Such storage depends on identifying suitable reservoirs, which should have both good reservoir properties (porosity, permeability) and seals to keep the stored CO2 where it is intended. Large sand volumes are present in injected sands in remobilized Cenozoic sediments. While sealing of injected CO2 in such reservoirs works well above the Sleipner field in the northern North Sea, this does not necessarily mean that the sealing above any remobilized Cenozoic sand accumulation is safe.

This project will address the sealing properties of remobilized sands in the Northern North sea. The work will include identification of remobilized sands from seismic data, evaluation of different models for their presence, and examination of seismic data to identify potential fluid escape structures that can be related to their presence. The work is a part of a larger effort to understand trapping of buoyant fluids in the subsurface in the Pestoh (PEtroleum and co2 STorage students Of Hermanrud) Group, which presently consists of 1 Ph.D student and three MSc students.
